Annotations: Obvious disclaimer - Things noted here are just my ramblings and reasonings. They may not mean much. Don't take them as the only explanation of anything. If you have something to add to these notes, email geo1@acpub.duke.edu. Intro: The description here is taken from the WGP webpage. www.pepin.demon.co.uk/wolves or something like that. "Behind the bar..." Padriac. "a girl, her blond ringlets..." Chloe. "a strange-looking man of over seven feet tall" Kao-Liang. "a man... silver and iron." Balinok. "another petite blonde" Illyana. "An Asian woman" Hitiko. "a short, dark-haired girl" Gabrielle. "A man... floats beside him." Dancer and Max. "A woman in a wheelchair" Nineve. "A Japanese woman... brown-haired man" Myung and Paul. "A tall, thin woman... about him." Rhiannon and Garret. "An unremarkable... metal cat" Frederic and Lady May. "A tall woman in robes" Karieta. "An albino man" Shane. "A pregnant woman" Aetna. "A brown-haired... red-haired man." Plots and William. "A woman with green eyes" Rowan. 1. In which a girl walks into a bar. The obvious (bad) joke being that she does, indeed, walk into something. *boom* Compulsive bad humor was a common flaw in the world she came from. 1/1 Gegi's entrance. 1/2 Gegi meets Plots. The red-haired man here is William, not Bavin, but William does not figure greatly in this story, so no care was taken to identify him. "I haven't seen any. At least, not that I know of." - It was this line that caused her to wander into this conversation, of course. "I didn't know we had any posters in New York..." Posters to the newsgroup, that is, as she believes she has fallen into the dream of someone playing the game, and her physical location was NYC, last she knew. 1/3 Gegi meets Chloe. Gegi's recognition of her surroundings happens in the middle of this conversation - at that point, she begins taking the threat of Sabbat seriously. 1/4 Gegi meets Gabby What a mess of mistaken identities. Gegi recognizes the Nocker as looking just like Gabby, a girl from her school. She therefore assumes that the "real" Gabrielle is now a gamer participating in WGP and has written this Nocker as her self-character. Gabrielle recognizes Gegi as a girl from her school as well, but this time as someone who betrayed her. "They threw you out. You have -nothing-." She recognizes that Gegi is not fae, but does not realize that this Gegi never was. She believes Gegi has been cast from the Dreaming. Seeing that this Gabby hates her, Gegi assumes that the "real" Gabrielle has written "Gegi" into "Gabby's" history as a villain and is upset. Also note that Gabby slapped her. It's not the only time she reacts in this manner. 1/5 Gegi meets Garret The discussion of magick cut here would be better served by your buying a copy of Mage, if you don't have one already. 1/6 Gegi tries to work out the reality of her location. She lists off characters she played in the past. "I've always believed in storytelling." Possible WW joke? Stryder - A Garou. 1/7 Gegi meets Hitiko. Hitiko mistakes Gegi for Synthea, one of the characters mentioned in 1/6. Why Gabby didn't make the same mistake is... well, a possible plot hole. "What did she do, steal my characters?" Gegi knows that her Synthea was never involved with anything called ICME. If the "real" Gabrielle has now become a gamer, has she resurrected the character of Synthea to give herself background? 1/8 Childhood The man Plots is speaking to is Stryder. Gegi says her first name for the first time, and begins to hint at the troubled past with Gabby. 1/9 "but now I find it hard enough to handle succeeding for the wrong reasons..." Explained in the next section. "when those HITMarks walked in." Which is why he was covered in bandages, 1/2. Predestination is mentioned. 1/10 "Easier not to know than to know that things aren't as I'd want them to be." Although what happened is not covered in this version, in another part of the story she suffered a mental collapse after getting the answer to a question. 1/11 Gegi meets Bavin, and first becomes suspicious of her necklace. The necklace bit was not in the original storyline and was added for symbolism and to aid in the possession sequence. See notes for 2. 1/12 Gegi mentions the cult. 1/13 "Most curses are self-inflicted..." And fates are chosen. See 10/16. 1/14 1/15 ""Before you panic..." Her eyes widen." Too late, she panicked. Lyrical Ballads - The title is an obvious allusion, but also simply points out that, well, this is a song. Plots played this for Gegi during a conversation about emotions and both of their usefulnesses, or lack thereof. 2. In which a demon is battled. 2/1 Gabby rushes in blindly and gets flamed. Bavin snatches the fire away and Sinjin knocks her down. 2/2 "I'm crazy, you see." And convincing her otherwise would take quite an effort. 2/3 Gegi attempts to justify gaming to Chloe, difficult in her position. 2/4 Plots also gets into situations, but doesn't rush at them quite as stupidly/aggressively. "Boo." GURPS fear spell, cast at a level requiring only one word. We thought it was appropriate. "The woman in robes..." Karieta is from the Celestial Chorus. Handy to have around during a possession. "I am here by invitation..." See notes on the necklace. 2/5 More discussion of sanity and emotion, and of her use of people to bleed off excess. 2/6 Gegi overextends her empathy, and again gets a warning about the necklace. 2/7 Fight sequence. 2/8 Taunting Plots. "Don't touch that!" Falsely letting him believe that removing the necklace will do something... 2/9 ...although he quickly learns otherwise, after he gets it off of her and nothing changes. Kao-Liang puts out the fire with Obtenebration. 2/10 (My birthday, incidentally) Recognition of the problem with the necklace. 2/11 The attraction of the dark side. 2/12 "A ripple of mental energy..." What Garret has done is mentally immoblize the demon controlling her body. Gegi, therefore, is kicking him while he's down. Stun/Scream, variant on GURPS Psionics. 2/13 "I hope that's not a bad sign..." But most curses are self-inflicted, after all. (1/13) 2/14 Ophelia. 2/15 "lies collapsed on the floor." Rhiannon is highly sensitive to demonic forces. This possession caused her to pass out in pain. In the original post, Garret did not say anything to her as he carried her out, but I needed to get Rhi's name said for the record at this point so she could be referred to later on. "In the name of Dana and Yahweh..." In the original post, Myung grabbed Garret's hand, not Karieta's, and this declaration was done in the name of Dana and Shiva. Karieta instead used a Correspondence effect to trap the demon elsewhere. "...pulls off the necklace..." The conversation in which she would have removed the necklace was never written, as Bavin's player was absent for a period. However, in 2/10 it was clear that she was becoming aware of the necklace's threat, and -would have- removed it if the conversation hadn't been interrupted by outside forces. Therefore, the event was simply mentioned as if it happened. It would have. Having a sense of fair play, I didn't like having her bound to a demon and tainted because of something she knew nothing about and could not have prevented. Therefore, for the Pub storyline, I made the necklace the representation of her pact with the demon, a pact made while she was "reciting strange things" with the cult. She did not understand the terms of the contract, or even that there was a contract, but it was being played by definite rules. Wearing the necklace signified her acceptance and her upholding her part of the deal. She had to remove it of her own free will to break the deal. Plots' pulling it off did nothing, especially since she had already been taken over. Myung's pyrotechnics would have gotten rid of the possessor, but this version allowed pub-Gegi to retain a bit more self-esteem. Which, as we will see, was important. Interlude - In which the story suddenly changes direction. Changes direction, and locale, and characters. Every piece marked Interlude is a journal entry from the other side. The story of the suicidal woman is retold. "almost as if I went somewhere else entirely" This dizzy feeling is the only remnant of her visit to the Pub. She mentioned the dream plane in 2/5, and that she was exiting it when she landed in the Pub in 2/6. "Lung. Like the card." Reference to some TSR trading cards in which such dragons as the Li Lung were depicted. "Dagon..." The "archduke of the seventh torment" bit is taken from Good Omens, in which it was a title given to the demon Dagon. This is the first time his name has been given as the being that possessed her. "Enedel" The first time that name has been used instead of "Chappell." She does not explain the possession. What happened was that she asked Enedel to scan her, much as she asked Garret in 1/13, to see if she had psionic abilities that could be trained. This is the question referred to in the note for 1/10. He told her that she did not, and she collapsed. At that point, the demon assumed control. A long string of symbols, including "phoenix." Listing seven seals. 3. In which the story discovers itself. Discovers itself in the difference between pub-Gegi and journal-Gegi, which she is becoming aware of. 3/1 Gabby and Plots. "She betrayed me..." Another hint at the Gabby/Gegi situation, but no explanation yet. "She snaps her fingers and claps her hands..." Enchanting him. 3/2 "orange light" In the other world, when Dagon was forced out of her body, he floated away in a cloud of orange smoke. This also connects from 3/1 and the orange light cast by Gabby's illusion. Little segway. "Let me sum up." Princess Bride, of course. "until I had a nervous breakdown and he took over" As noted in the interlude. 3/3 The need for people, as mentioned in 2/5. Chloe's reaction to drowning. "thick blue liquid" Ventrue blood with food coloring in it. 3/4 "Never advertise such streaks." See note for 1/2. 3/5 Mitch's first appearance. "Your Sire?" She mistakenly assumes Mitch to be Malkavian and ignores hints to the contrary. "Fasoma Span." A clue as to Mitch's real background... the Rratcha. (See online Nephandi texts.) "fairy cake" Reference to one of the Hitchhiker's Guide books and the problems with viewing infinity. 3/6 3/7 Trouble with her father mentioned. "Like a seaport for airships..." First hints that Chloe is not from modern times. "I should have known better than to trust something that came from a father." Again the family problems. 3/8 "I'm crazy, I told you that." And she won't listen to anyone saying otherwise. 3/9 Mention of Synthea again. "he wasn't really your father" No, he was a Ventrue. 3/10 "Stop being a rock" See Preludes and Nocturnes. Another comment on forcing reactions and psychic vampirism. "I am more than I appear. He was wrong, or he lied. I believe." As noted under the necklace explanation, this Gegi has more self-esteem. 3/11 3/12 Levels of reality. 3/13 Chloe's time period established. "Someone here might be willing to adopt you..." Foreshadowing. Another hint of the past with Gabby. This has been hanging for quite a while now. 3/14 "and something steps in to take its place..." segway into another match with Mitch. 3/15 Note the lack of identifying pronouns in their speech, making it harder and harder to tell who is saying what, what leads to what. "Be warned... it can be very dangerous..." He did warn her. "I wish only to see with what is in me." And she knew better. Preludes and Nocturnes The title is that of a Sandman collection. One of these pieces is clearly a prelude. "blond man with pointed ears" Enedel. "passive and changeless as a rock" As mentioned in 3/10. "The Queen of Cups. The moon." The moon features early in her symbolism. "child of the rain, water-in-air" Another important symbol. "passive aggression" 3/10 "I am the broken mirror." Malkavian symbol. "I am my own greatest fear, and my undoing." Fates are chosen. The second time that she speaks the name Georgina, and the first for Esta. (The reference is to a character in a Piers Anthony novel. Esta was an abuse victim.) Synthea/Christine. "Are you the mask, or she who wears the mask" This question irritates her at the time, but may later have more relevance. "to transform a Thou into an Object." Existential reference. "A woman" Rowan, who hasn't been introduced yet. 4. In which a question is finally answered. The question of what happened between Gegi and Gabby, of course. 4/1 Lord of the Flies, as mentioned to Chloe. 4/2 Broken mirrors again, and the introduction of Mauritz, who -is- a Malk, unlike Mitch. "Thoughts that are not my own" "Inspirations from the Infinite" Early hints of the intuition that comes to control her. "We act on what we perceive. Everything can be manipulated." Foreshadowing Chloe. 4/3 "He died in a boating accident last spring." Which is why Chloe is uncomfortable with drowning. Garret returns from Christmas vacation. 4/4 Garret's problem with Time, Gegi's problem with Time and Correspondence. The attack plans for Autocthonia had been going on for a while, but Gegi was never involved. 4/5 Are we mad for thinking we are mad? Quoting Elfboy annoys her. (She relayed the whole rock-speech to Plots elsewhere.) 4/6 Mitch, and again it becomes very difficult to see who says what. All running together... 4/7 The Dark Lady's entrance, and Rhiannon's reaction. 4/8 "the last two life-threatening encounters" One being the possession, and the other being Aetna wanting to rip her and her Sabbat friend into little pieces. "The beautiful silver-haired woman" Rowan. "Synthea?" Wondering what she perhaps should have wondered before. Third time that she uses her first name. "surprised that she suggested it so quickly." Because Synthea is a slider, which Gegi wouldn't know, her staff has a lot of experience with alternate worlds. "since the trouble with Christine" The aforementioned Sabbat member. "Yes, except for - " Except for the symbols representing Gegi's name, which obviously wouldn't be on Syn's pack. 3/9 Plots annoys Gegi, and nearly triggers an entropic reaction, but avoids disaster. "My mother married my father. Big mistake." The family trouble again. 3/10 The Dark Lady ensorcels Chloe. "A blond stranger" Simon Wargrave. Or rather, a Marauder pretending to be Simon. It's complicated, so it was ignored. Chloe is noticeably seeing things. 3/11 Plots blushes easily. They argue, but Gegi manages to win by default when the Dark Lady creates a commotion and distracts Plots from his purpose. 3/12 "Too many people in my head." "I do it subconsciously so much that it's hard to say what I'm planning." 3/13 Pulling Garret into the web. "pulling out a sliver of bone" Using a minor Entropy effect on her speech. 3/14 Another sequence containing lots of unmarked dialogue, although Mauritz makes more sense than Mitch. In the rhyming section, he speaks the first line each time. "Especially when the prophet lives in your head" was first spoken by him in 4/2. The answer to the dot puzzle, for those who don't know it, looks like this: *-*-*-. |\ / * * * | \/ * * * |/ The trick is going outside the assumed lines around the grid. "When to step outside the boundaries." 4/15 Panic. Choking herself. (subconscious Life control) Interlude "Some guy named Cimon" Or Kyman, as she mentioned to Chloe upon her dizzy spell around 3/3. The incident with Cimon happens just before the group with Enedel gates out. If she mentions it in the Pub when she awakens, it must have just happened... but this journal entry is written -after- that, and she has not left the Pub again. The timelines are now running parallel. The rest of this explains her reactions in 4/11 and 4/15. Pub-Gegi was experiencing the emotions of her counterpart. "a nut thing" that would summon demons. 5. In which many entrances and exits are made. 5/1 She stops choking. 5/2 Emotional encounter with Garret. "You, her, and I are all wrapped up in one another's Dharma now." "the imp at the old man's house" Mentioned in the Interlude. Again, something she did not know about until 4/11. "That lady did that too..." Chloe has just seen Gegi's eyes shift color. It's just one of the illusions she's seeing, of course. 5/3 Manipulations. Gegi admits partial responsibility for things caused by her... but insists that other people have a part in it, and it's not -all- her fault. "Bobby" A name that won't come up again for a long time, but -was- mentioned here. 5/4 "Chloe is screaming..." Was happening in many threads, not reproduced here. 5/5 Garret summons help. "The man with the metallic cat." Frederic and Lady May. Garret gives the name in a moment... that probably wasn't in the original post, but helps. Lachesis - The name of one of the Fates, who determines the length of the life. "gaje" One of the many spellings for the gypsy word for rootfeet - non-gypsies. 5/6 Astarial's entrance. Kao-Liang's name and description aligned for the reader. "Gegi and Gabby" Who have been off working out their differences. This is one of those interesting quirks of fate. Gabby hasn't done much in the larger plot so far except give Gegi something to be upset about. But the character -does- know Latin, and Gegi does not. That and being a pale, dark-haired, pointy-eared individual made it natural for her to approach Astarial. Without Gabby, Gegi would probably not have spoken to him, and he might never have gotten involved in this... Gabby uses full names, not abbreviations, but no one ever remembers. :) 5/7 Michael's entrance (And Balinok's exit, but he hasn't really been mentioned until now.) Michael mistakes her for Synthea, but quickly realizes she is not. "looks at his hand and laughs" Surprised to see that it's a normal hand, not tentacled, not golden. 5/8 Plots' exit. Mandy - Whose name he called out when flambed. She'd been in the Pub for a while - he called her and she and Gegi had a long discussion about life after death. "things are gonna change" From the Tori Amos song Winter. 5/9 Chloe and the crystal. 5/10 Watcher. A corrupted kin-fetch. Brought here by Malcolm in search of Marie/Cuckoo, an ex-BSD who was his mother. Rhiannon had been looking after it. She pulls away from Chloe, because the lingering taint about her is giving her a headache. These two were a perfect match, derangement-wise, weren't they? 5/11 Chloe as the Moon. Gegi reacts badly - remember that she called the Moon as one of her identifiers back in Preludes and Nocturnes. 5/12 "You did it too..." Touched her mind, that is. Emotions - Happy when she thinks it's an acknowledgement of her own psychic energy. Fear at the sudden thought that she -could- do it... the sudden suspicion that she could do it again, that she -did- do it... a sudden troubling feeling of responsibility for what happened to Chloe. Frustration for the unexplained fear... and then worry for Chloe as she remembers what she's supposed to be doing here. 5/13 Illyana. The card of Strength, wrestling Lions. "Master of Butterflies" Garret summoned a show of jeweled butterflies to celebrate someone else's romance. "A soul in love belongs only to itself." 5/14 No identifiers are given, but you can recognize Gegi and Mauritz at it again, and that Gegi's responses are more hopeful than they were before. 5/15 "To stand up for herself!" The other one needs the Strength. Bavin, who has been seen to have special interdimensional abilities, pulls Gegi out of a hat... ...but she gets stuck... And a flash of powerful magick from somewhere else pushes her through, fully into the Pub universe. Interlude Universes collide, the strength of one is lent to the other, and the touch of the Light provides the push seen in 5/15. And she becomes a mage after all. "The Hero's Journey" - I could say it was a blueprint for an epic, but I think I'll let you research the reference. She's seeing traces of it in her quest, at least. 6 - In which we have demon trouble again. 6/1 This was affected by rl circumstances. By the original plans, Garret would have been the one to pull Gegi through the barrier, not Bavin. You can see him planning to do so. As his typist was unable to communicate for a while, though, things happened differently. The rift opening just as Gegi hits pub-reality is not a coincidence, though. 6/2 Differing levels of reality. 6/3 The first appearance of 'Deanna', the glowing woman. "Chloe dodges..." As Gegi's hands got near her, her sight began to flicker and go black, but returned as she moved away. "Can't you see?" And thus the spell is broken. 6/4 Karieta takes the crystal. 6/5 The Marauder and the Immortal battle and Paradox goes flying. Included because it was funny, and to explain Illyana's attire. 6/6 Gegi finally catches on to the danger she put herself in, but a little late. Mitch finishes his summoning. Only those with high knowledge of Correspondence can see what he did... and Gegi, because he's communicating the knowledge to her mind. It gets blocked out by the reality shift, of course... mostly. And he is hauled off by... something. 6/7 Diving into the rift. 6/8 Gegi takes an interest in Astarial, and starts to get her mindspeech under control, making Gabby unnecessary again. Gabby sees Morgan (a Pooka childling) crying and goes to her. 6/9 Chloe finally gets the point. (Although less literally than Wesley Crusher on the famous Trek card.) The illusions are torn away, and she sees nothing. "lawn chair" The vampire (well, close) threatening to make furniture out of the mage (well, mostly) in a cute little twist (almost literally) of expectations. Vicissitude creates bad jokes... Karieta grants some magickal senses to Chloe. (Being differently sighted herself.) Gegi gets snatched out of the timeline by the rift she dove into. 6/10 Gegi gets the hang of the mindspeech, and Bavin prepares to help Astarial. And the rift pulls her away. 6/11 Chloe thinks about her situation. The flames are a Garou Gift, although I can't remember the name. 6/12 The earpiece was worn by Gabby when she first entered. She pulled it out, turned it off, and threw it away during the standoff between Christine and Aetna (mentioned in note to 4/8) because Synthea was listening through it and Synthea doesn't like Christine, although Gabby does. Gabby didn't want to be listened in on. At this point in time, Synthea has shown up in Rick's Cafe to greet an old friend (Erehwon), and from there tries to contact Gabrielle. 6/13 More fun with Chloe and the bane. 6/14 Karieta begins the cleansing. 6/15 And now we draw your attention to the timespace rift that's been sitting here all through this section. "Where is Rhiannon?" Segway to... The Rift "whatever spell you have used to shield the wizard's soul from me" As Lachesis said, love binds him before any pact. Rhi demonstrates her ability to irritate people with cool reason. :) "a brief expression of alarm" Because of the demon-summoning nut given to her counterpart, mentioned in an Interlude. The ground shudders after Astarial throws the whatever in. The connection with Garret's mind is cut off, because he is no longer in that plane. 7 - In which old debts are settled, and healings begun. 7/1 "the rift suddenly flares outward" This was written before the situation -inside- the rift was resolved. To save trouble, those inside decided to jump - thus the sudden exit at the end of the last piece. "a small object" The seed, of course. 7/2 "Ereb-" Erebus. I hear it's a Werewolf thing. I wouldn't know. Chloe faces the dangers of "cleansing." 7/3 "And do you remember me telling you..." 4/4. "after Alberon died" The same period referred to in Preludes and Nocturnes. "TANSTAAFL" There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. "I said no." On the topic of how much one is willing to pay for power. She is referring to the option given to her counterpart of killing her companions in order to learn magic. From one of the Interludes, visualized in 11/3. 7/4 7/5 Karieta washes the false taint away from Chloe with ease, but finds something deeper. 7/6 Gegi brings Astarial to Chloe. "this other weaving" The complicated one, mentioned as the dark core in 7/5. 7/7 It is no accident that this falls at seven and seven. "Harry" A Marauder. We think. "You know... who I am?" He understands that she is an Author who has fallen into the story. He shouldn't know that, or so she thinks... suddenly she's very confused about what he is, and how he could know her as the person behind Synthea.... or more frightening, to her, how he can see the person behind himself. 7/8 Sacrifice. The connections between the timelines explained. 7/9 Gabby's exit. "She turns to Garret..." Subtextually, Gabby was attracted to Garret. This was intended to be her final exit from the Pub (although she wouldn't realize it) and in this way, never to be allowed to say goodbye. She was supposed to cross the street to the Cafe to meet Synthea, but never arrived. Somewhere in the middle, she went Poof! and was not meant to be seen or heard from again. But things don't always turn out like we plan them. "hobgoblin" A projection of a mage's madness, taking on physical form. Sort of. 7/10 Chloe attempts to make sense out of what the bane says. A dangerous occupation, at best. 7/11 The crystal is returned to Chloe. Garret settles his debt. 7/13 They forgot the 12. Shh, don't tell. "Victor" Victor Toombs, played by the same person. "stand behind the pillar" Reference to a Sierra computer game, Space Quest IV. For those who want to stretch the symbolism, the game did involve time travel. "Synthea and Erehwon" Friends, as noted in 6/12. "A lot of people say that, and then vanish forever..." Meant to be a reference to Gabrielle. But. "She smiles. "Promise?"" IIrc, this is extremely reminiscent of an exchange between Edge and Synthea a game-time year past. Angels of darkness and demons of light, and nothing's as simple as it seems at first sight. "Making Michael Prometheus" From the So You Want To Be A Wizard books. "Aziraphale" From Good Omens, a must-read for the morality of angels and demons.. "The Winner of Graves?" Victor Toombs again. "Georgina. My name is Georgina." Even she didn't know why she wanted him to call her that... "Black Dog" The gaming company within the WoD. Corrupt, and marketing twisted versions of the WW games. She gets a headache and babbles, "Evan" being the key name she lets slip, the name of Michael's creator. 7/14 Chloe explains. "Mahri... Aetna" The Garou in the Pub... "Malcolm and Jean" The other two Garou in the Pub, one a Metis, the other sometimes a BSD. Gegi starts sounding confused... "Beware the choice, beware refusing it..." From Duane again. 7/15 No longer attempting to thread the dialogue between them into linear form. It wouldn't work that way. "Don't you want to take off your head?" Thinking of Labyrinth. "March. No, September. Ouch." It was March in the "real world" at that point, and also in the other-timeline... except that the other party then jumped forward six months. "What good is timeless eternity?" Anentropia, that she mentioned to Mitch. The Wounded Sky. He says her name, and the future can be foreseen. She defends Evan. 7/16 "KA-CHING!" It's Paul who calls out. 7/17 Lady May eats the demon. "I am *not* asking you to join the Euthanatos." Somehow, when he said this, I the player was reminded of Gericault saying to Mercedes, "I am not asking you to become barabbi." (From the intro to Mage 2nd, for those who don't have it - and she did eventually become Nephandi.) "Michael's sister" - Or so she said when he showed up. Shelley. Garret offers her a trip. The World According to Wolves Glen Pub Pretty straightforward stuff, but it was her introduction to the factions, and handy background for any reader who isn't a Mage player. "I was a Goth very briefly" - Which is what got her possessed. 8 - In which there is much confusion 8/1 Gegi and Chloe's friendship showing strain. 8/2 Bavin's handy gift. "trick you're supposed to be able to do" - From Patricia Kennealy, _The Copper Crown_. "... a favorite maneuver of desperate lightswordsmen. The gold laser had reflected from the gold color of the cloak, the color-frequencies cancelling each other out, and the lightswordhad shorted and died in his hand..." Useful only for defending against one, though. Many people took this opportunity to make duct tape jokes... it has a dark side and a light side and holds the universe together. 8/3 Gegi and Astarial talk about choices and oaths. He discovers her Dark Fate. 8/4 Gegi and Shelley. "Allemaraine." - From the Deep Space Nine episode "Move Along Home." The poetry quote Gegi uses was written in an open poetry book in the LambdaMOO Coffeehousee (#11115.) 8/5 Puzzling over the visions. Oath and Choice - Duane again. 8/6 "He jests at scars" that never felt the wound. Romeo and Juliet reference. "Vulcan justice. What is given must be earned." Referencing a Star Trek novel, _The Pandora Principle_. The "three rules" were Skaar's invention. Jay got quite a knock to the psyche from reading the mind of a dead person, Skaar got a worse one from the foretelling of his death, and as for Hell... "Go to Hell." - I think this is from STVI. "Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn." - Song quote. 8/7 Gegi, Chloe, and the visions. "courage of your convictions" - Interview with the Vampire. "Does it get any better..." a Meatloaf song. 8/8 Watcher; Astarial examines Chloe and restores her eyesight. 8/9 "I am not a rock." The Preludes speech again. Christine, the Fae, and circles. 8/10 Gegi/Astarial. Fate and bindings. 8/11 Kao-Liang. 8/12 Astarial diagrams the weaving and searches for motive. 8/13 Nephandi and the future. 8/14 Discussing magick. 8/15 Gegi's "subconscious"... the intuition that she follows without questioning at times. 8/16 Garret and the proper use of force. 8/17 Puzzling the Dark Lady's purposes for meddling with Garret. She knew too much. 8/18 Kao-Liang again. 8/19 Methods of execution. Just one of those bizzare conversational tangents. Gegi and Garret go on a trip. The Big Easy The cane is a sword-cane. "Dinas Emrys" - where Rhiannon lives. "I never promised you a bed of roses." What exactly is he quoting? There's _I Never Promised You a Rose Garden_, which is a lovely book about a girl surfacing from schitzophrenia. Certainly an interesting possible allusion, especially if you consider Awakening circumstances to be rather maddening. "No bed of roses" comes up in the Queen song "We are the Champions". Or he could have just meant it like it sounded. They took her watch away. No technology allowed. She flashes a bit of instinctive Mind magick at Max, but it is ignored. At this point, she still can't stop herself when it comes to Mind. The rest of this trip was never written. 9 - In which there is much searching for motive. 9/1 Was the Dark Lady really doing harm? 9/2 Events are replayed through the mirror. "some symbol" When her hand was first displayed to Garret, I didn't want to figure out what the symbol was. It has always been referred to as "some obviously Nephandic symbol." "Not on your first visit." - Annelle's line from _Steel Magnolias_. 9/3 Astarial speaks of his home. Gegi gets jealous and upsets Chloe. The price of power. "I just know." That quirky intuition again. 9/4 More Christine discussion. "betrayed herself without even knowing it" Because Christine was violently opposed to the use of mind magick, but was without knowing it 'possessing' her twin sister, exiling parts of her personality to the other body. Gegi had explained this to Rhi or KL. "The ineffable plan?" _Good Omens_ reference again. 9/5 Gegi goes briefly nuts. 9/6 Price of power again. 9/7 What has the Dark Lady wrought? "It just seems that if she knew so very much about all of us, and about the future, it would be foolish for us to assume that everything happening now is not going exactly as she planned it..." 9/8 Astarial takes an oath to protect Chloe. 9/9 Astarial's getting suspicious of Gegi, but her madness turns out to be Paradox feedback. 9/10 Power. 9/11 Responsibility and control. 9/12 Perspective. "A lot of the same problems, actually." - She believes that Plots was undergoing his Awakening as he left. "They all want to help you." Jealousy is such a bitch. 9/13 Mitch re-appears, and she panics, suddenly starting to remember what happened before. 9/14 Futures and glowing baubles. 9/15 Magickal stylings and examining the crystal. "But I do remember a definite feeling of... well, yes, absence of strength, an inability to act almost because of it." - Again, don't ask me, the zap wasn't my idea. Assumably it was pulling power from her. 9/16 Wardings. 9/17 "Is that true evil? To sit and do nothing?" Dragonlance reference. "Jess" Jessica Benson, now Hunter. The missing co-owner of the Pub, mentioned back in 1. 9/18 "I read it in a book somewhere" _Burning Water_, Mercedes Lackey. Method for breaking a spirit-tie. "the theory is sound" One of those things you never want to hear from an SoE. It -should- work... Astarial and Rhiannon are definitely suspicious. 9/19 "you're really a Cardassian" A Deep Space Nine episode. Bavin knows something no one else does... but isn't telling. Devilbunnies The name itself comes from the people of alt.devilbunnies. Several contributors to this work can also be found there. But this all goes to Karen. 10 - In which there is love and corruption, and we can't always tell them apart. 10/1 "her, a knife..." From 9/18. Why didn't the Dark Lady steal her when she could? 10/2 Emotions. Trying to deal with the jealousy issue. 10/3 Michael/Evan's song. The final quote, up until "more alone", is his. "Look up, little one..." comes from _The Pandora Principle_ again. (It was Little Cat there, a reference to Saavik.) 10/4 Rhiannon 10/5 Death 10/6 Magick and fate. 10/7 Lucky number 7. Gegi and Michael forge a connection. "I will never be the same" - Melissa Etheridge. 10/8 Chloe's past 10/9 Planning. Are you sure of what you're doing? 10/10 The troubles between Gegi and Chloe. 10/11 Another Tarot reader appears. "the peacock's eye" According to a palm-reading book, the peacock's eye on the pinky is the mark of a writer. Ace of Cups and The Sun. Iirc, the Sun was drawn at a separate time, but as both cards are important, they're both included here. The Ace of Cups is simple and refers to the happy times ahead. But who, exactly, is the Sun? It could be one of two people... "There is shadow under this red rock." From TS Eliot, source of much Hollow One stuff. 10/12 Vengeance 10/13 We start talking to ourselves in side quotes. "a skater" Mark Mitchell, but I got over it. 10/14 The power of guilt and self-inflicted pain. 10/15 The side quotes start having a lot of fun. "Nothing, your hair in the moonlight..." This is a cheated line, because it's from _Rent_, which technically the character hadn't seen at that point. But hey, Time is a funny thing. "We really should get you out of here..." Referencing what the DL said to her back in 3/10. 10/16 Foreshadowing Garret. She draws the Chariot reversed. "There are some fates that are ordained, and some fates that are chosen. Changing a fate that is ordained is hard. Changing a fate that is chosen is impossible, because someone *cares*, you see? 10/17 Falling over the edge, Falling for you. A hand held. 10/18 "She is not Nephandi..." About time someone stated this clearly. Anna thinks that the Dark Lady might be a Marauder. 10/19 Lindsay and Connie, other blonds who bring painful memories. 10/20 Mitch and the jukebox. And Epic Poems (Continuing from Lyrical Ballads) Speaking of the jukebox... credit for this one goes to Anna Simpson. 11 - In which a bane is healed, a truth revealed, and a kiss received. The end of the beginning 11/1 Gegi is definitely starting to make Chloe nervous now. "Do's and don'ts..." Chanted by a killer in the form of a child in the DS9 novel _The Siege_. 11/2 Watcher gets defensive of his pretty one. Gegi forgets why Chloe is sensitive to drowning. 3/3, 4/3. 11/3 Memory dump. "Standing in a dark alleyway" This is just before meeting the Nightflyer in New York. "Huddling on wet grass" A later combat with the Nightflyer. "Standing in front of a coffin" Becky, mentioned in the Big Easy. "A girl, blond" Lindsay. "Being in the Pub" Dagon's possession and fireballs. "You are standing in a green forest" With Enedel. "Running into a bathroom" Childhood. "He's laughing at you." From the backwards man's house. "A vision" Mitch's correspondence. "Grabbing hold" Undoing the contract, 2/15. 11/4 Chloe's reactions to what she saw. 11/5 Astarial gets upset. "widderslainte" One who was a Nephandi in a past life and is generally doomed to Fall again. Everyone yells at Gegi. 11/6 Slightly calmer. Garret tries to help. The trouble with intuition. 11/7 Forgiveness? 11/8 Michael offers comfort? 11/9 How Gegi feels about Chloe. 11/10 Watcher. "I'm like you." I've been tangled up in the Dark, but I'm trying to get out of it. Prophesying the end of the Pub? "I work hard to acheive that effect." How to deal with people and love. 11/11 Senses of humor. 11/12 "To save Becky" The Big Easy, 11/3. Fathers. 11/13 Astarial gets the idea to summon Gegi's Avatar. (A truth revealed.) The runes flare out and vanish as it breaks the bindings that were holding it to a "true form" (the stormy thing which revealed her to be of Primordial essence.) 'Deanna', the form seen before (6/3). 11/14 Love and family. Garret suspects that Chloe and Gegi might be the children of the woman he killed (Preludes and Nocturnes.) 11/15 Gegi and Chloe argue. "Plunging headlong into Hell my own way." Surprisingly, this -is- foreshadowing. :) 11/16 Rowan tells the story of Marie Stands-Alone and frees Watcher. (A bane healed.) 11/17 What is an avatar? "Her power failed to save her." Her power failed. Her magick failed. Funny thing, that. Why would her magick suddenly cease to work and get her killed? Hrm... 11/18 Trying to reach an understanding. We'll stay away. 11/19 Old friends show up. "Emily" Gegi's middle name. "I may be back before I leave" Again, things turn out in unexpected ways. This exit was sent just before May 1st, so that she could spend Beltaine with her new friends. She was intended to turn up again in a few weeks. However, all of my reference materials, including her character sheet, ended up being left at school while I went home for the summer. Therefore she, like her mirrored equivalent, took the summer off. 11/20 "Georgina Emily Okerson" The only time she -ever- gives her full name, or even her last name. An emotional goodbye (A kiss received.)
